It is a pleasure to invite you to the 4th RtL SA Conference. The conference is organised by Reading to Learn & WCELTA and will take place at Mondeor Eco School in Somerset West. The theme of our 2019 conference is ‘Breaking Barriers to Literacy’.
2019 marks South Africa’s 25th year as a democracy and the time has come where we need to face our greatest educational challenge - literacy. Literacy is the answer to most challenges faced in classrooms today. But many teachers are unequipped to help learners overcome this challenge. They are expected to follow a lock-step program to get through the prescribed assessments in the short time provided. This can result in feelings of hopelessness from teachers. It is one thing to talk about this issue but quite another to face it in the classroom. For most South African learners, reading for meaning is still an insurmountable challenge. In an age of more technology than ever before, information is freedom - reading for meaning has become a survival skill.
Goal of the conference
This conference aims to open a space for dialogue about literacy teaching and learning. We want to bring educators and researchers together to talk about the problem of literacy from practical and theoretical perspectives.
In this conference, we call for contributions that:
• Offer perspective on the problem of literacy in South Africa
• Inspire educators and researchers
• Discuss the benefits and pitfalls of current classroom practice
Sub-themes
• Decentralising learning
• Democratising the classroom
• The enjoyment of reading for meaning
• Integrated literacy practices and pedagogies
• Storytelling and literacy
• Children’s literature
